Laser Therapy For Back Pain

If you suffer from back pain, you are not alone. According to the journal Practical Pain Management (PPM), up to 85 percent of U.S. adults will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. Oftentimes, this back pain is acute–the result of a specific, temporary injury that resolves in a relatively short period of time. For approximately 5 percent of individuals, however, back pain is chronic, meaning it lasts longer than three months.

In 2003, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved laser therapy as a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain and inflammation. Since then, this innovative, non-invasive treatment has proven to be an excellent option for patients experiencing back pain.

Laser therapy works by using focused light at specific wavelengths to reach injured tissue. These rays stimulate production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s natural compound for promoting cellular energy and growth. The result is enhanced circulation, reduced inflammation and accelerated tissue repair, all of which can minimize pain and speed recovery.

Benefits of Laser Therapy

Deep tissue laser therapy is FDA-approved as a safe and effective back pain therapy. It offers a non-surgical, non-pharmaceutical alternative to reducing back pain.

At ProSpinal, we specialize in Class 4 laser therapy. With more power than Class 3 “cold lasers,” we are able to treat the affected area in a relatively short session–typically less than 10 minutes.

Many patients are concerned that treatments may be painful or require a lengthy recovery period. Nothing could be further from the truth. Since the laser wavelength cannot penetrate clothing, the laser is administered directly to the skin. Most of our patients describe the warming sensation as pleasant and soothing.

Not only does laser therapy soothe back pain–it also treats the root cause. In fact, it offers a variety of ongoing benefits, including:

  • Reduced pain: Laser light limits the body’s production of the chemical bradykinin (a pain stimulant) and releases endorphins (a pain reliever)
  • Enhanced circulation: Laser stimulates capillary formation in damaged cells and widens veins and arteries, allowing for increased blood oxygen flow
  • Reduced inflammation and muscle spasm: Laser increases white blood cells and antioxidant production and minimizes molecules that cause inflammation
  • Accelerated tissue repair: Laser stimulates ATP, the body’s natural compound for promoting cellular energy and growth

Laser therapy can be used in conjunction with other non-invasive methods–including our spinal decompression therapy–to help heal your back pain.

At ProSpinal, we take back pain seriously. We offer several back pain therapy options that can eliminate the need for surgery or pharmaceutical intervention. Our deep tissue laser therapy and spinal decompression therapy program serves patients throughout Reno and the surrounding areas, including Sparks, Carson City and Lake Tahoe.
